빈티지 폴리포켓
1999년, 내가 7살 때 크리스마스 선물로 ‘폴리포켓’이라는 장난감을 선물 받았다. 90년대에 폴리포켓은 전 세계적으로 많은 어린이들에게 인기를 끌고 있었지만, 나는 폴리포켓에 대해 잘 모르고 있었다. 단지 문구점 구석에 있었던 폴리포켓은 내 눈에 들어왔고 그것을 크리스마스 선물로 요구했었다. 집에 와서 포장을 뜯어보니 이 장난감은 생각보다 엄청났다.
폴리포켓의 외형은 플라스틱 재질의 둥근 모양, 하트모양, 별모양, 조개껍질 모양 등으로 다양하며, 공통점들은 크기 때문에 모양 상관없이 화장품 컴팩트 파운데이션을 연상한다. 그리고 내부는 컴팩트 모양에서 전혀 예상치 못한, 아주 작은 인형의 집 같은 공간들이 나온다. 90년대 초반까지는 이런 컴팩트형 폴리포켓이 전형적이었고, 그 이후에는 하우스형 폴리포켓들도 생겨났다. 내가 크리스마스 선물로 받은 것은 하우스형이었다. 개인적으로 폴리포켓의 매력은 컴팩트형일 때라고 생각하지만, 이 하우스형도 재미있는 요소들이 많다. 보통 하우스형 폴리포켓은 옆으로 돌리거나 위로 잡아당겨서 여는 구조이다. 겉모양에서부터 이미 이 장난감이 어떠한 요소를 포함할지 짐작이 가는 점에서 조금은 아쉽지만, 컴팩트형과는 다른 매력이라면 집 모양이기 때문에 조금 더 현실적인 공간놀이가 가능했다.
내가 처음으로 가진 폴리포켓은 ‘Drive-Thru Burger Stand Restaurant’이다. 외형으로 봐도 딱 햄버거 가게라는 것을 알 수 있다. 옆으로 돌려서 열면 내부공간이 생겨난다. 조금씩 천천히 열 때마다 공간은 계속해서 새롭게 변해갔고, 그것이 참 흥분되었다. 이렇게 공간의 변화를 볼 수 있는 것은 하우스형 폴리포켓의 큰 장점이다. 누군가는 바로 열어서 내부에 만족하고 놀 수 있었지만, 나는 이 장난감은 분명 외부와 내부의 공간의 상호관계적인 놀이라고 무의식적으로 느끼고 있었다. 지금은 희귀성과 추억 때문에 이 장난감을 모으고 있지만, 폴리포켓은 어린 시절 나에게 공간에 대한 관심을 채워주기 좋은 장난감이었다. ■박선민
The Vintage Polly Pocket
In 1999, when I was 7, I was given a toy called ‘Polly Pocket’ as a Christmas gift. Polly Pocket was popular among kids all over the world in 90’s, but I did not know about Polly Pocket. The polly pocket was in a corner of a stationary store and caught my eye, so I told my uncle I wanted it as a Christmas gift. As soon I got home, I unpacked it. It was more amazing than I expected.
There are many shapes of Polly Pocket toys; round, heart, star, shell and other shapes in plastic, The common thing between them is that they all remind you of compact powder cosmetics because of its size. The inside has space like a very tiny doll house which is unexpected from its compact appearance. until early 90’s these shapes were typical and house shaped Polly pockets came out later. The Polly pocket I had as a christmas gift was house type. I personally think the attraction of Polly pocket is when it is compact shaped one, but this house type also has lots of fun sides. You can usually open house shaped Polly pockets by turning to one side or pulling the roof up. It is a shame a little bit that you can assume a certain element inside from the appearance, but the different attraction with compact shaped one is possible to play more realistic ‘space play’ because of the house shape.
My first Polly pocket was ‘Drive-Thru Burger Stand Restaurant’ You can see it is a burger store from the look. Opening it sideways reveals internal space. When I moved it little by little, the space was constantly changing to something new and it made me excited. It is a huge advantage of the Polly Pocket house type to see the space changing. Anyone could open and play it right away, but I was unconsciously feeling that this toy was surely an interplay between the outside and the inside. Now I collect these toys because of its rarity and a part of my childhood memories, Polly Pocket was a good toy for me that satisfied the interest I had for space in my childhood. ■Seonmin Park
