In the story of Marcel Proust's novel "In Search of Lost Time," the narrator eats Madeleine soaked in black tea, which reminds the narrator of his childhood. As such, things from the past sometimes come to mind due to unexpected things.
The room where I lived in Kladow, Berlin, for about a year and a half was where I isolated myself from people. Living for so many months or more, the room, which was enough for one person and narrow for two, was also Berlin itself to me. The sunlight coming in from outside the window was the only link from outside. I would often spend time watching the shadow of leaves on the wall. I missed the room when I moved to Antwerp, Belgium, but I forgot about it, and I had a chance to stay in Berlin for two days and spent nights in the room with the permission of a landlord. While staying there, I found the shadow of a branch. At that moment, the memories of the space came to mind. This shadow operates like the Madeleine of Proust visually.
Later, I had a period of quarantine in Antwerp due to the pandemic. This time, the isolation that I did not choose began. Isolation was very familiar to me, so it was not difficult. I spent my time in bed all day, and I happened to see sunlight coming in from the window. The shape of the sunlight changed every day depending on the time of day and weather. I felt like I found the link between time and space in Berlin and Antwerp. The only other thing is that I accidentally "discovered" in Berlin and recalled the past. I tried to find and observe it. I observed and recorded this sunlight every week in Antwerp. This behavior is probably like trying to find Madeleine as a medium after tasting Madeleine. I was once again spending time in isolation with this Madeleine.
